Dr Yasmin Akrum graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 1992. She was then based in the Institute of Dental Health followed by the Government Dental Clinic. She then embarked on specialist training and proceeded to complete her Masters in Science (Periodontology) at the Eastman Dental Institute, University of London in 1995. After working in the private sector for 5 years as a periodontist, she returned to the National Dental Centre (NDC). While in NDC, apart from a clinical practice restricted to the speciality of periodontics, she was also involved in the training of dental surgery assistants and dental hygienists/therapists. Her job scope there also includes conducting research; providing consultations to junior dentists and other specialists; conducting study clubs and lectures for Continuing Professional Education.

Presently, she is a visiting specialist at NDC involved in clinical research as well as overseeing clinical postgraduate studies and is a part-time clinical tutor in the Faculty of Dentistry, National University of Singapore.

Her advance speciality training at the National Dental Centre has honed her clinical skills to not only stabilise patients with periodontitis via conservative and surgical treatment but to also restore the function and aesthetics of patients utilising various soft and hard tissue grafting techniques and implant surgery.

She is a member of the Society of Periodontology (Singapore) and the Academy of Medicine (Singapore). Her research interests include the relationship between maternal periodontitis and the delivery of a preterm, low-birth weight infant.
